Certain quaternary ammonium compounds react with an indicator, the color of which changes from
yellow-green to turquoise-blue. The concentration of the quaternary ammonium compounds is
measured semiquantitatively by visual comparison of the reaction zone of the analytical
test strip with the fields of a color scale.

This test measures the quaternary ammonium compounds usually present in
these sample materials, in other words, e.g., alkylbenzyldimethylammonium
chloride (benzalkonium chloride), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB),
hexadecylpyridinium chloride, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (lauryltrimethylammonium
bromide, LTAB), octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride.
4. Influence of Foreign Substances
Protein concentrations lower than 1g/l do not interfere with the determination.
5. Reagents and Auxiliaries
|The analytical test strips are stable at least up to the date stated on the pack when
stored in the closed tube at +15 to +25°C.

Samples with a content of quaternary ammonium compounds higher than 500mg/l must be
diluted with distilled water.
|Immerse the reaction zone of the analytical test strip
in the measurement solution for approximately 2 seconds.
Shake off excess liquid from the test strip and after 60 seconds determine with
which color field on the label the color coincides most exactly.
Read off the corresponding concentration value in mg/l. If an exact color match cannot be
achieved, estimate an intermediate value.
Notes on the Measurement:
- The color of the reaction zone may continue to change after the specified reaction time
has elapsed. This must not be considered in the measurement.
- If the color of the reaction zone is equal to or more intense than the darkest color
on the scale, repeat the measurement using fresh, diluted samples until a value of
less than 500mg/l is obtained. This must then be multiplied by the
corresponding dilution factor.
8. Method Control
To check analytical test strips, reagents, and handling:
Dissolve 100mg of alkylbenzyldimethylammonium chloride in distilled water, make up to 1000ml
with distilled water and mix. Content: 100mg/l. Analyze this standard solution as described
in section 7.
