EM Quant^® Nickel Test, Catalog No. 10006

Test strips and reagent for the detection and semi-quantitative determination of Nickel(II) ions

General

Typical applications for the Nickel Test include the testing of waste water and electroplating solutions. It also has various applications in the glass and ceramics industry, in the testing of catalysts and of mordants used for textile printing. It is a simple way of detecting metallic nickel in alloys and electroplated objects. The reaction zone is moistened with 10-25% ammonia solution and pressed on to the object being tested. If nickel is present, the reaction zone turns pink. Steel types used in pipework, drums, etc., can thus be rapidly identified.

Principle of the Method

Nickel(II) ions react with diacetyldioxime to form a light red complex. The reaction is almost quantitative when the hydrogen ions produced are intercepted by a buffer.

0 - 10 - 25 - 100 - 250 - 500mg/l (ppm) Ni²⁺

Directions

Immerse the test strip in the sample solution for 1 second, so that the reaction zone is thoroughly moistened.

Remove the test strip, gently shake off excess moisture, wait 30 seconds and compare the reaction zone with the color scale.

Note

The pH of the sample solution must be between 2 and 7.

Buffer strongly acidic solutions (pH >2) with sodium acetate; solutions above pH 7 with sulfuric acid.

The basis of the Nickel (Ni²⁺) Test is the standard method for detecting nickel ions. Since other divalent ions form complexes with diacetyldioxime, the reaction zone on the s trip is impregnated with masking agents to suppress interfering reactions. As a consequence, the Nickel (Ni²⁺) Test is so specific that it is capable of measuring as little as 10mg/l Ni²⁺ in the presence of 5000mg/l Cu²⁺ and 5000mg/l Fe³⁺.

Influence of Anions

The detection is not disturbed by less than:

1000mg/l Br^–,BrO₃^–, Cl^–, ClO₃^–, ClO₄^–, CrO₄^2–, F^–, I^–, IO₃^–, IO₄^–, MnO₄^–,Mo₇O₂₄^6–, N₃^–, NO₂^–, NO₃^–, OCN^–, PO₄^3–, SCN^–, SO₃^2–, S₂O₃^2–, S₂O₄^2–, S₂O₅^2–, S₂O₈^2– , SeO₃^2–, VO₃^–, WO₄^2– , acetate, ascorbate, succinate, tartrate, oxalate (read after 1 minute), citrate (read after 1 minute), 50mg/l of CN^–, 10mg/l of [Fe(CN)₆]^3–, [Fe(CN)₆]^4–.

CN^–, 10mg/l of [Fe(CN)₆]^3– and [Fe(CN)₆]^4–, form complexes with Ni²⁺ which are destroyed in the usual manner by fuming off with concentrated sulfuric acid.

Influence of Cations

The detection is not disturbed by less than:

1000mg/l Ag⁺, Al³⁺, Au³⁺, Ba²⁺, Be²⁺, Bi³⁺ ,Ca²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cr³⁺, Cu²⁺, Fe²⁺, Fe³⁺, K⁺, Li⁺, Mg²⁺, Mn²⁺, Mo²⁺ to Mo⁵⁺, NH⁴⁺, Na⁺, Pb²⁺, Rb⁺, Sb³⁺, Sr²⁺, Ti⁴⁺, Tl⁺, VO²⁺, Zn²⁺, Zr⁴⁺

Elimination of Interference

If the color produced on the reaction zone differs from the color scale, wait 1 minute and compare again. If the color still cannot be matched, foreign ions are interfering. Interference can be prevented through the use of masking agents as set out in the table below:

Add 1 spatula-tip of the masking agent listed to about 5ml of the test solution, shake and then test for nickel(II) with the strip.
