EM Quant® Molybdenum Test,Catalog No. 10049 Test strips and reagent for the detection and semi-quantitative determination of Molybdenum ions General The Molybdenum Test is chiefly used in the analysis of boiler water and cooling water as a means of measuring levels of molybdenum or molybdate added to inhibit corrosion. These test strips allow a rapid semi-quantitative determination of most inhibitors to be carried out outside the laboratory, to check that the concentration is within the specified range. Please see the manufacturer's instructions for the inhibitor concerned. The test can also be used to determine molybdenum on metallic surfaces, e.g. in order to differentiate between stainless steels with and without molybdenum (V 4A and V 2A, respectively). Principle of the Method Molybdenum reacts with toluene-3,4-dithiol in an acidic solution to form a green color complex. Graduation 0 - 5 - 20 - 50 - 100 - 250mg/l (ppm) Mo6+ Directions Rinse the measuring vessel several times with some of the water sample and fill to the 5 ml mark. Add one microscoop of reagent and dissolve by swirling. Immerse the reaction zone in the solution for 1 minute. Remove the test strip, stroke the edge against the rim of the vessel to remove excess liquid, and compare the reaction zone with the color scale. Note For this test, the pH must be adjusted to below pH 1. This value is normally reached by adding the reagent. If the amount of reagent specified in the directions is not sufficient to lower the pH to this value, adjust by adding more reagent, or alternatively, adjust to pH 4-6 with 25% sulfuric acid prior to the determination. 1mg/l MO5+ ~ 1.67mg/l MoO42+ Determination on Metallic Surfaces Apply one drop of 25% hydrochloric acid and one drop of 30% Perhydrol to the surface and stir to mix. When gas development has ceased, add a spatula-tip of ascorbic acid and stir until the yellow solution becomes colorless. Then apply 4 drops of water, stir, hold the test strip against the surface for approximately 15 seconds, wait 1 minute and evaluate the reaction zone. V 2A stainless steel reacts negatively. V 4A stainless steel reacts positively. There is a slightly different approach for steels containing nickel. Influence of Anions The detection is not disturbed by less than: 1000mg/l Br–, Cl–, CN–, ClO3–, ClO4–, CN–, CO32–, F–, I–, NO2–, NO3.
