EM Quant® Manganese Test, Catalog No. 10080 Test strips and reagent for the detection and semi-quantitative determination of manganese(II) ions General The Manganese Test can be used for routine testing of ground water, industrial water and effluent. Another useful application is the determination of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) in boiler feed water. It can also be used for quality control purposes wherever manganese compounds are used in the manufacture of pigments, paints and anti-corrosives, in tanneries, and within the textile industry. Principle of the Method The determination is based on a redox reaction. Following immersion in the sample solution, treatment of the reaction zone with sodium hydroxide solution produces manganese dioxide, which converts an organic redox indicator to a blue oxidation product in the presence of acetic acid. Graduation 0 - 5 - 25 - 100 - 500mg/l (ppm) Mn2+ Directions Immerse the test strip in the sample solution for 1 second so that the reaction zone is thoroughly moistened. Immerse the reaction zone for 15 seconds in 1mol/l solution sodium hydroxide. . . . . .then for 45 seconds in 10% acetic acid. Remove the test strip, stroke the edge against the rim of the vessel to remove excess liquid, and compare the reaction zone with the color scale. Notes The pH of the sample solution should be between 1 and 7. Alkaline solutions must be buffered with sulfuric acid. Because the Manganese Test contains a redox indicator, it also responds to oxidizing cations and anions. The presence of these ions is signalled, however, by a brown or blue discoloration of the reaction zone on immersion in the sample solution. Other Reagents Required 1 mol/l sodium hydroxide solution and 96% acetic acid. Influence of Anions There is no interference at less than: 1000mg/l Br–, BrO3–, Cl–, ClO3–, ClO4–, CN–, F–, [Fe(CN)6]4–, I–, IO3–, Mo7O246–, N3-, NO3–, OCN–, PO43–, SCN–, SO32–, SO42–, S2O32–, S2O52–, SeO32–, WO42– , acetate, ascorbate, oxalate succinate or tartrate. 500mg/l S2O43– Influence of Cations There is no interference at less than: 1000mg/l Al3+, As3+, Ba2+, Be2+, Bi3+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Cu2+ , Hg2+, K+,mg2+, NH4+, Na+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Rb+, Sb3+, Sn2+, Sr2+, Tl+, Zn2+, Zr4+ In the presence of more than 500mg/l Ti4+, Fe3+; 100mg/l Fe2+ or Cr3+, the Mn(II) concentrations indicated are less than actually present. In the presence of more than 250mg/l Fe3+ there is also a green discoloration. More than 1000mg/l Co2+, Cu2+; 500mg/l Ag+; 250mg/l VO2, Hg+ or 10mg/l Ce3+/4+ give a false positive reaction for manganese(II) ions by producing a color change of green to blue. More than 10mg/l Au3+colors the reaction zone green to brown. Elimination of Interference Mn2+ is detected in the presence of NO2+, IO4–, [Fe(CN)6]3– and S2O42+ by evaporating with concentrated sulfuric acid. NO2– is destroyed by adding amidosulfuric acid. One gram of Amberlite® IRA-400 anion exchanger removes: 100mg CrO42– at pH 0-6 60mg [Fe(CN)6]3– at pH 1-7 300mg IO4 at pH 2-3 180mg S2O82– at pH0-7 80mg VO3– at pH 5-7 or Au2+ at pH <1.5 Ti4+ is masked by adding 1 small spatula tip of KF to approximately 5ml of the acidic solution (pH 1-2). Fe2+ is oxidized to Fe3+ by H2O2 at pH >1. At higher iron(III) concentrations, sodium acetate is added to the acidic solution (pH 1-2) to bring the pH to 4-4.8. After brief boiling and filtering, the filtrate is tested as described. Ag+ and Hg+ are removed by adding NaCl. Cd3+/4+ is removed by boilling for 2-3 minutes with calcium fluoride, molybdenum blue by shaking for 2-3 minutes with a small amount of cadmium powder, and Cr3+ by adding ZnO and heating until the mixture boils. This procedure must be repeated until the solution is colorless. VO2+ is oxidized with KCIO, (boil for 2-3 minutes) and the VO3+ formed is then removed.
