EM Quant® Lead Test, Catalog No. 10077
Test strips and reagent for the detection
and semi-quantitative determination of lead ions
General
The EM Quant® Lead Test strips
are ideal for the semi-quantitative determination of lead ions in
solutions and for detecting metallic lead and compounds on surfaces.
Despite being highly toxic (lead poisoning=the
accumulation of lead in the body through inhalation and absorption of
lead vapors and dust), lead is used for many purposes such as cable
sheathing, for protecting against Xray and gamma radiation, in
batteries, for manufacturing tubes and containers, in paints (red
lead) and as a petroleum additive (in the form of tetraethyllead), to
prevent engine knocking. It continues to be used because it is
versatile, easy to work (soft and malleable) and resistant to
corrosive liquids.
Lead found in our environment (water, soil, the
food chain) can mostly be traced back to vehicle exhausts and the
combustion of leaded gasoline. The combustion process yields lead and
lead oxide. Most of the substances are discharged directly into the
atmosphere, but small amounts are deposited in the exhaust pipe. It is
thus possible to tell whether or not a vehicle has been run on leaded
gasoline.
An interesting application is the testing of
catalytic converters. These become "poisoned" through the
occasional, inadvertent use of leaded gasoline, so allowing high
concentrations of NO2 compounds to enter the atmosphere through
vehicle exhausts.
Please note that the EM Quant®
Lead Test only detects ionic lead. It will not respond to organic
compounds such as tetraethyllead in gasoline.
Principle of the Method
Lead reacts with rodizonic acid in an acidic
solution to form a red complex.
Graduation
0 - 20 - 40 - 100 - 200 - 500 mg/l (ppm) Pb2+
Directions
In aqueous solutions:
- Rinse the measuring vessel with some of the
sample and fill to the 5 ml mark.
- Add 3 drops of reagent (acetic acid) and
swirl cautiously.
- Immerse the test strip in the solution for 1
second so that the reaction zone is thoroughly moistened. Remove
excess liquid by stroking the edge of the strip against the rim of
the vessel.
- Wait 2 minutes and compare the reaction zone
with the color scale.
Notes
The pH of the solution being tested should be
between 2 and 5. This is normally the case once the reaction has been
added. If the quantity of reagent specified in the directions is not
sufficient to adjust the solution to this pH (check with a pH
indicator strip), strongly acidic solutions must be buffered prior to
the determination with 1 mol/l sodium hydroxide solution: alkaline
solutions with 1 mol/l nitric acid.
Reagent then no longer needs to be added. Also,
solutions already at the correct pH do not require reagent to be
added.
Because of its measuring range, the test is not
suitable for checking compliance with the drinking water and
discharging limits.
Directions
On surfaces:
A) 1. Apply 1-3 drops of reagent to the surface
to be tested.
2. Use the top of the test strip to stir the
reagent several times and leave to react for 1 minute.
3. Briefly press the reaction zone gently onto
the surface and allow the solution to soak into the reaction zone.
4. Wait 1 minute and compare the reaction zone
with the color scale.
B) 1. Moisten the reaction zone with 1 drop of
reagent and, without delay, gently press for 2 minutes against the
surface being tested.
2. Compare the reaction zone with the color
scale.
Evaluation: any red coloration indicates that
lead is present. If the reaction zone is colorless to yellow, no lead
is present.
If the surface determination cannot be performed
directly, e.g. because an exhaust pipe is positioned at an awkward
angle, transfer a sample from the surface being tested to the
measuring vessel and conduct the determination as follows:
Directions
Solid Sample:
- Use a screwdriver or similar tool to scrape
a small amount of exhaust deposit into the measuring vessel.
- Add 5 drops of reagent, mix and leave to
react for 1 minute.
- Immerse the test strip in the solution for 1
second so that the reaction zone is thoroughly moistened. Remove
excess liquid by stroking the edge of the strip against the rim of
the vessel.
- Wait one minute and compare the reaction
zone with the color scale.
Evaluation: Any red coloration indicates that
lead is present. If the reaction zone is colorless to yellow, no lead
is present.
Safety Precautions
Keep the reagent (5% acetic acid) away from the
skin. In the event of contact, rinse well immediately with plenty of
water. Seek immediate medical attention if substance enters the eye.
