EM Quant® Fixing Bath Test, Catalog No. 10008 Test strips for assessing the fixing capacity of fixing baths (pH and silver(I) ion concentration) and for the detection and semi-quantitative determination of silver General The Fixing Bath Test provides a rapid method for establishing whether a fixing bath is still fresh enough to fix films and prints properly. It is also eminently suitable for checking continuous operation fixing equipment in which the silver(I) ion concentration is set to combine sufficient fixing capacity with a short fixing time. Performing a simultaneous pH determination provides an additional benefit in that a change in the pH value also signals that the bath is stale. Furthermore, the test can be used to monitor the recovery of silver from fixing baths. If the recovery system is functioning properly, silver should no longer be detectable. Principle of the method Silver ions react with yellow cadmium sulfide to form brown-black silver sulfide. Graduation 0 - 0.5 - 1 - 1.7 - 3 - 5 - 7 - 10 g/l Ag+ 4 -5 -6 -7 -8 pH units Directions Immerse the test strip in the sample solution for 1 second so that the reaction zone is thoroughly moistened. Remove the test strip, gently shake off any excess liquid, wait 30 seconds and compare the reaction zone with the color scale. Notes As little as 100mg/l of silver can be detected 1-2 minutes after immersion as a dark yellow color appearing on the light yellow reaction zone. The sensitivity of the test strip can be increased (10 to 100 fold) by leaving the strip to stand in the sample solution for anything between a few minutes and a few hours. The reaction zone furthest away from the user's hand gives the silver content; the reaction zone closest to the user's hand, the pH. When checking strongly colored fixing baths, rinse the reaction zone briefly with water prior to reading. Determination in fixing baths Film fixing baths Silver Content: below 3g/l for normal fixing baths (sodium thiosulfate) below 5 g/l for rapid fixing baths (ammonium thiosulfate) 5-7g/l for automatic fixing baths depending on the fixing time pH: between pH 4 and 6 Paper fixing baths Silver Content: below 3g/l) pH: between pH 4 and 6 Recommended values may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. If the pH is found to be too high or too low, a new stop bath must also be made up. In many photographic and X-ray laboratories, fixing baths are rejuvenated with fixing salt once the silver has been recovered. Frequent repetition of this procedure involves the risk that the fixing bath will no longer afford adequate fixing despite having a low silver content. Interference The detection is not interfered with by less than 1000mg/l (ppm) each of: Al3+, As3+, Bi3+, Co2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Sb3+, Sn2+, Ti4+, T11+, V5+, W6+, Zn2+, Zr4+. Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Hg2+ show up as false positives. Interference through false positives can occur in stale fixing baths or those contaminated with copper or iron compounds. This type of contamination can be detected using the EM Quant® Copper Test or the EM Quant® Iron Test. Standard (10g/l) Dissolve 1.74g of silver bromide in 100ml of fixing bath solution.
