Test strips and reagent for the detection and semi-quantitative determination of arsenic ions

General

The Arsenic Test can be used for determining arsenic in water, soil extracts, pharmaceutical products, prepared biological specimens and liquid foods.

Under normal circumstances ground water may contain anything up to 0.1 mg/l of arsenic. In mineral water the arsenic concentration may be considerably higher.

Ground water contamination may be the result of poorly laid out or unsuitably sited waste dumps. Wells near waste dumps must therefore be checked regularly for their arsenic content.

The Arsenic Test can also be used to monitor levels of arsenic compounds in a variety of manufacturing processes and to check the limits in electrical components, catalysts, special types of glass and certain electroplating baths.

Principle of the method

Hydrogen arsenide is formed when zinc and hydrochloric acid are added to test solutions containing tri- and pentavalent arsenic compounds. When a test strip is held in the headspace above the solution, hydrogen arsenide causes the reaction zone, which is impregnated with mercury (II) bromide to turn yellow to brown. Mixed arsenic mercury halides such as AsH2HgBr are formed.

Directions

  1. Insert a test strip halfway through the slot in the cap of the reaction vessel, reaction zone first.
  2. Use the syringe to transfer 5ml of sample solution to the reaction vessel, add 1 measuring spoon of reagent 1 and shake.
  3. Add 10 drops of reagent 2 (hydrochloric acid) and attach the cap immediately to the reaction vessel.
  4. Leave to stand for 30 minutes, swirling gently 2 or 3 times during this period.
  5. Remove the test strip, dip briefly in water, shake gently and compare the reaction zone with the color scale.

Safety Precautions

Keep reagent 2 (32% hydrochloric acid) away from the skin. In the event of contact, rinse well immediately with plenty of water. Seek immediate medical attention if substance enters the eye.
